The North Atlantic
The current’s ocean and Lena’s study area in Book 1
The North Atlantic is the study area of Book 1. Here the Atlantic pushes seventeen million cubic meters of warm water north every second. It cools, grows heavy, sinks, and flows back south as a cold deep current. This overturning circulation is the reason Hamburg doesn’t freeze over in February, even though it lies at the same latitude as Labrador. No satellite can see how much water sinks; that’s why Lena heads out to measure a depth profile, four to six weeks aboard the FS Nordmark. Half the deep-sea moorings out there run on a single series of sensors.
