Yuki Tanaka is a climate data analyst aboard the FS Nordmark. Lena Voss knows her from an hour’s conversation in Geneva three years earlier, as a woman who says little at conferences and then says the right thing. Yuki is in her late thirties and small. Some people mistake her calm for coolness; in fact, it’s concentration. On the first night she rearranges the instrument room, and it looks as if it had always been that way. While she works she says almost nothing, afterward a great deal. At cards she loses three rounds and then wins six. The two of them are on a first-name basis.
