Characters
Lars Brandt
CEO of Meridian Risk Systems in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld
Lars Brandt is CEO of Meridian Risk Systems, the company that builds the A-series sensors. Half the deep-sea moorings in the North Atlantic run on this series, and the ICRU gets measurement data from Meridian too. Brandt is fifty-two, tall and gray-haired, wears a suit without a tie, and comes in at seven every morning. In nine years he has turned a company of fourteen employees into one with two hundred and six. In the lobby in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld hangs a sentence he wrote himself: We measure what others build on. When a request from Lena Voss for unprocessed readings comes in, he asks a question he has rarely asked in nine years: what do the calibration records say?
First encounter
- First noticed: the receptionist isn’t in yet, so he turns on the lobby lights himself
- Speaks: short and direct; his first line is “Who is Voss?”
- Object: the sentence in brushed metal in the lobby
