Dorn Reservoir (Dam and Power Plant)
Reservoir, dam, and a power plant deep in the mountain
Dorn Reservoir is a hydropower facility in the Dorn valley: a reservoir behind a dam and a power plant inside the mountain. The reservoir lies green and still; its maximum operating level is 1,047.00 meters above the Adriatic datum. Through a 700-meter pressure tunnel, the water drops into a cavern almost 400 meters deep inside the mountain, onto two machines. Whenever one of them starts up or shuts down, it’s called a load change; that happens many times a day. Behind glass is the control room, with three walls of screens. The shift supervisor is Tilda Imhof. Eleven years ago, someone here heard something during a load change and wrote it down. Now the shift supervisor is hearing the knock again.
