Lena Voss has worn a bracelet on her wrist for eight years and never talks about it. It has grown warm from her skin, and that warmth is the only way you can tell it’s there. It first appears in the first chapter, on a morning at the ICRU in Hamburg. On the crew list for a research cruise into the North Atlantic, under ship’s command, is a name Lena hasn’t spoken aloud in eight years: K. Sörensen. Anna asks whether she’s going. Lena feels the bracelet on her wrist and says: “I’m going.”
